Timor-Leste’s former President Jose Ramos Horta was appointed on 31 October 2014 to chair an independent panel to review the United States’ peace operations.

A statement from the UN News Center highlights the role and importance of new independent panel to review the UN’s peace operations that was to be chaired by Dr Horta.

“We must take stock of evolving expectations and consider how the organisation can most effectively advance peace, assist countries caught in conflict and ensure that our peacekeeping operations and special political missions remain strong and effective in a changing global context.”

Working together with Dr Horta would be 14 other world experts who will be conducting research and reports that would be available to the UN’s general assembly in 2015.

Previously, Dr Horta was assigned to represent the U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon in a former Portuguese colony Guinea Bissau from January 2013. Under Dr Horta’s leadership, Guinea Bissau was able to restore peace and order, re-engage with Western countries, reformed its military, organized both presidential and parliamentary elections and restored the state from failing. The former Timorese President’s mission ended on 30 June 2014.

Tribute to Dr Horta

Renova Timor recognizes its non-aligned online blog identity. However, the blog wants to take this opportunity to specially acknowledge the diplomatic talent, the sacrifices he made for International human rights and his passion to contribute to global peace.

Timor-Leste is blessed to have a son who is of international calibre and has strong influence on global causes.

Dr Horta has been the face of his country abroad throughout its struggle for independence and during the construction years of his new nation. Despite living outside the country most of the time, Dr Horta continues to promote causes for Timorese interests. He continues to promote the young country to foreign investors hoping they will invest in his country.

He continuously expressed his views on issues relating to human rights, conflict resolution, world economy, peace and reconciliation in many international forums, universities and international media. He is one of the finest son the country has ever have.

Through these continuous trusts from the United Nations and world leaders, Renova Timor hopes the world come to know Timor-Leste and Timorese to know the world. His tireless contribution to global causes may bring more peace and justice to war and conflict ridden countries.
